Opening of the international group exhibition «METAFASHION» in NIKOLSKAYA GALLERY
A large-scale international exhibition based on Open Call opens on August 30, 2022 «Metafashion» is an international project by Nikolskaya Gallery that explores the diversity of digital representation of fashion illustration. Based on an open call, the project presents a wide range of artistic techniques and styles of fashion drawing and 3D visualizations. The use of augmented reality technologies and WEB 3.0 creates a technological space for a new viewing experience.
The exhibition includes works by well-known and established authors, as well as works by young, gifted and promising artists. Each illustrator presented in the exposition has a unique and recognizable author's style. Here you can find works made in both impeccable minimalism and in a sensual, provocative manner. Exhibitors work with various materials from watercolors and acrylics to ink and designer markers, which make it possible to convey the dynamics of the drawing with an emphasis on the semantic details of the image. At the same time, an important focus of the exhibition is digital illustration and work with digital tools. The project introduces the viewer to the bright, bold and relevant works of contemporary artists and involves him in the wonderful world of fashion and beauty.
The exhibition focuses on the diversity of artistic techniques and styles of contemporary fashion illustration. Her history is rich in stunning graphics for print media, lookbooks and advertising campaigns. Until the 1930s, fashion illustration occupied a leading role in communication between a fashion designer or brand and the general public, gradually turning into an autonomous art. Covers for Vogue and Harper's Bazaar were drawn by cult fashion illustrators such as Georges Lepap and Erte, as well as the most famous artists of their time - Salvador Dali, Jean Cocteau and others. The appearance of photography destroyed the worldwide status of illustration and led to its final decline in the 60s, but today we are seeing the opposite trend.
The fashion industry, oversaturated with creative formats of photography, is increasingly collaborating with artists and preferring images with the author's individual handwriting; art is closely intertwined with fashion. The exhibition opens to the viewer a voluminous field of ideas and various interpretations of a fashion style drawing, which awaken the imagination and saturate the space with new unusual colors.
Metafashion opens a new chapter in the curatorial practice of Nikolskaya Gallery. The use of augmented reality demonstrates the wide possibilities of art representation. Also, synchronization of online and offline space allows you to globalize the project and provide access to the exposition to viewers from different parts of the world. A striking advantage of the project is the environmental friendliness of digital work, which allows to ensure the maximum safety of resources.
